Botox Q & A
What is Botox?
Botox is a neurotoxin that's injected into muscles to reduce muscle movement, thereby causing wrinkles to relax and soften. Although Botox is derived from the Clostridium botulinum bacterium, it's used in very small amounts that are both safe and effective.
Botox was approved by the FDA in 2002, and its use has steadily grown. Botox is now the most popular noninvasive cosmetic procedure in the United States.
What kind of issues can Botox help with?
Botox is an effective treatment for several kinds of facial lines and wrinkles. The most popular areas for Botox injections include:
The "11" lines
Medically known as glabellar lines, these are the two vertical lines that show up above the bridge of your nose when you frown or draw your eyebrows together. Over time, those lines start to linger longer and longer. Eventually, the lines can become etched into your face. Botox can smooth 11 lines out, even if they're etched in.
Forehead lines
These are the long horizontal lines that appear when you raise your brows. Like the 11 lines, the forehead lines usually go away when you move your brows back to their regular position, but over time they can become permanent. Botox can smooth these lines away.
Crow's feet
Crow's feet, the popular term for the crinkle lines outside of your eyes when you smile or laugh, are one of the first things that can reveal aging skin. By paralyzing the muscles that contract when you crinkle your eyes, Botox relaxes the area and reduces the appearance of crow’s feet without removing your ability to smile and laugh.
When you come in for your Botox treatment, you'll discuss your concerns with your Hamptons Medical Associates health provider and then plan a Botox treatment plan based on your needs. Many patients treat all three areas at once, but you may just need treatment in one or two of these areas.
How long until Botox takes effect and how long does it last?
Botox takes 24-48 hours to begin working, and most patients experience significant wrinkle reduction after a week. Your results continue to improve for up to one month.
Botox lasts for up to four months, but you may need a follow-up treatment slightly sooner (at around three months) or slightly later (possibly up to six months.) If you have follow-up treatments before the Botox completely wears off, you can keep your skin smooth and line-free long term.
