Revitalize Winter Skin With a Chemical Peel
Winter weather is tough on the skin. Not only is the air colder than usual, but it’s also extra dry, both outdoors and indoors. Winter air is naturally less humid, even here in Florida. And if the heat is on indoors, it just compounds the problem.
Your skin needs moisture to stay healthy and in balance. When winter air comes into contact with your skin, some of that moisture evaporates through your pores. Skin that’s dryer than normal can turn red, flaky and irritated, leaving you with some serious complexion issues that even makeup can’t take away. What’s more, when skin loses some of its natural moisture barrier, it’s more prone to other problems like eczema and even acne.
Chemical peels and winter skin
Chemical peels work by gently lifting the superficial layer of your skin, the layer where dryness causes the most damage. Peels can significantly improve your skin’s texture and appearance, plus they can even reduce fine lines and wrinkles that leave your skin looking old well before its time. Some peels increase collagen production, so your skin can continue to improve for weeks after your treatment.
At Hamptons Medical Associates, we offer three types of chemical peel:
Transform Peel
The Transform Peel contains lactic acid and salicylic acid to gently lift and slough away dead skin, as well as anti-aging compounds and extracts like green tea, alpha bisabolol ad chrysin. Retinols, peptides and antioxidants work together to help skin look fresher and healthier.
Clarify Peel
This peel uses salicylic acid and mandelic acid, an alpha hydroxy acid made from the extract of bitter almonds. In addition to providing powerful resurfacing benefits, mandelic acid is good for aging effects caused by sun exposure (photoaging) and irregular pigmentation. Like the Transform Peel, the Clarify Peel also contains green tea extract, alpha bisabolol and chrysin to help restore skin to a more youthful appearance.
Refine Peel
If you’d like to tap into the benefits of a chemical peel without any downtime, the Refine Peel could be a great choice. This peel contains a unique combination of acids, including lactic acid, salicylic acid and citric acid for a milder peel that still yields great results. The Refine Peel also includes anti-aging peptides to help skin look and feel fresher and more youthful.
All three peels are part of the Jan Marini system of peels, well known for being effective in revitalizing damaged skin, yet gentle enough for all types of skin. Each peel can be used with all skin types, including skin that’s sensitive or acne-prone.
After your peel
After your peel, that upper layer of dull, dead skin will flake away, revealing softer, smoother, more supple skin underneath. Depending on the type of peel you choose, it might take a couple of weeks for all the dead skin to flake away. But once you see your glowing complexion, you’ll agree a couple of weeks of flaking is well worth it.
Since your skin will be extra sensitive after your peel, it's important to follow your care instructions. That includes using a special moisturizing cream to help skin stay supple while it's healing and avoiding sun exposure. You'll also need to use sunscreen on a regular basis, and if you have a deep peel, you'll be prescribed medicine to prevent infection.
Want to avoid flaking? With the Refine Peel, you'll have very minor flaking for a day or so, but in most cases, you'll be able to wear makeup the day after treatment.
Choosing the right peel for your goals
If all you're looking for is a little boost to help your skin weather the winter, the Refine Peel could be a good choice. But if you're looking for more dramatic results, including a reduction of those fine lines and wrinkles, the Transform Peel or Clarity Peel might be a better choice. At Hamptons Medical Associates, we'll work with you to understand your goals so we can recommend the best option to help you get the results you want.
